What Is HDPE Pipe?
HDPE pipe (High Density Polyethylene Pipe) is a thermoplastic pressure pipe manufactured by extrusion, using high density polyethylene (HDPE) as the main raw material. Thanks to its outstanding corrosion resistance, flexibility, abrasion resistance and heat-fusion jointing technology, HDPE pipe has become one of the most widely used pipe materials in modern infrastructure construction. It serves municipal water supply, industrial water transmission, mine tailings and slurry transport, agricultural irrigation, gas distribution, fire protection systems and cable protection.
As global infrastructure continues to be upgraded, more and more projects specify HDPE pipe produced from PE100 and PE100 RC materials in order to meet the demands of higher pressure, larger diameters and more complex long-term operating conditions. From city water supply to mine slurry transport, and from seawater desalination to large industrial circulating water systems, HDPE pipe delivers excellent all-round performance.
If your project is mainly for municipal water supply, you can continue reading HDPE Water Pipe Manufacturer in China and HDPE Pipe for Water Projects in Saudi Arabia to see how different regions select HDPE pipe sizes and pressure ratings for their water supply works.
Why Is HDPE Pipe Becoming More and More Popular?
Compared with traditional steel pipe, ductile iron pipe, concrete pipe and some PVC pipes, HDPE pipe is not only easier to install, but also offers a longer service life and lower maintenance cost. That is why it has become a key choice for modern piping projects.
Outstanding Corrosion Resistance
Traditional steel pipe rusts easily when buried for long periods. HDPE is a polymer material: it does not suffer electrochemical corrosion, and it is not affected by most acids, alkalis and salts. This makes it particularly suitable for underground pipe networks, chemical industrial parks, coastal areas and other highly corrosive environments.
This corrosion resistance not only extends the service life of the pipeline, it also significantly reduces maintenance expenditure, delivering a lower whole-life-cycle cost for the project.
Heat Fusion Creates a Leak-Free System
HDPE pipe is normally installed by butt fusion or electrofusion.
Once fusion is complete, the joint and the pipe body form a single monolithic structure, and joint strength can reach or even exceed that of the parent material. This effectively eliminates the seepage problems that can occur with traditional flanged or rubber-ring joints.
For site preparation, welding procedures and installation precautions, see How to Install HDPE Water Pipes for the standardised installation process and quality control requirements.
Design Life of 50 Years and More
HDPE pipe produced from PE100 raw material typically offers a design life of more than 50 years under normal design pressure and operating conditions.
As material technology advances, PE100 RC further improves resistance to slow crack growth (SCG) and to point loading, which makes it especially suitable for trenchless installation, mining projects and complex ground conditions, giving even more reliable long-term operation.
For more on PE100 material performance and dimensions, read HDPE PE100 Pipe Specifications.
Smooth Bore Reduces Operating Energy Consumption
The internal wall of HDPE pipe has a low roughness coefficient and does not scale easily in long-term service, so flow remains stable while friction losses and pumping energy consumption are reduced.
This is particularly valuable for:
- Long-distance water transmission projects
- Municipal water supply trunk mains
- Industrial circulating water systems
- Large diameter water transmission works
For large infrastructure projects, this effectively lowers the long-term running cost of the whole system.
Excellent Flexibility
Compared with rigid pipe materials, HDPE offers far better flexibility and can absorb a certain amount of ground settlement, temperature variation and seismic movement.
In mountainous terrain, soft soils and complex geological conditions, HDPE pipe therefore greatly reduces the risk of pipeline damage caused by ground displacement.
Superior Abrasion Resistance
For media containing solids — slurry, tailings, fly ash and dredged sediment — abrasion resistance is often more important than pressure capacity.
PE100 HDPE pipe has excellent abrasion resistance and, in many mining projects, clearly outlasts ordinary steel pipe. It is therefore widely used for:
- Gold mine tailings transport
- Copper ore slurry transport
- Iron ore slurry transport
- Power plant fly ash transport
- River dredging projects
If your project is in the mining industry, read PE100 HDPE Pipes for Mining Projects: Long Service Life & Corrosion Resistance to understand the advantages of PE100 material in mine transport systems.
Light Weight and High Installation Efficiency
HDPE pipe weighs only a fraction of steel pipe, so transport, loading, unloading and installation are far easier, which cuts plant and labour costs on site.
For large diameter water transmission works above DN500, different pressure ratings and structural designs can be selected according to project requirements. For large diameter products, see Large Diameter HDPE Pipe Supplier for applications of different sizes in major infrastructure projects.
HDPE Pipe Product Range
With the continuous development of polyethylene materials and production technology, HDPE pipe now covers a complete product range serving water supply, municipal works, mining, industry, agriculture, gas and fire protection. Because every project has different requirements for the conveyed medium, working pressure, installation environment and service life, the right product type should be selected according to the actual operating conditions.
HDPE Water Supply Pipe
HDPE water supply pipe is one of the most widely used HDPE products today. It is mainly used for city water supply, rural drinking water projects, industrial water supply and large water transmission networks. Compared with traditional steel pipe and PVC pipe, heat-fused HDPE water pipe forms a completely leak-free system, which lowers water loss rates and reduces later maintenance costs.
HDPE material meets potable water transport requirements and causes no secondary pollution of water quality, so it is already used in municipal water supply projects worldwide. When selecting products, the PN rating and SDR series should be chosen according to design pressure to ensure safe long-term operation.
To see how water supply projects in different countries apply it, read HDPE Pipe for Water Projects in Saudi Arabia and HDPE Pipes for City Water Distribution Projects.
HDPE Mining Pipe
Mining is one of the fastest growing application areas for HDPE pipe.
Tailings, slurry and concentrate transport usually involve large quantities of abrasive particles, which places much higher demands on pipeline wear resistance. Compared with ordinary steel pipe, HDPE pipe offers superior abrasion resistance and does not corrode, so it extends pipeline service life and reduces downtime for maintenance.
HDPE mining pipe is currently used for:
- Gold mine tailings transport
- Copper ore slurry transport
- Iron ore concentrate transport
- Lithium and nickel ore beneficiation systems
- Power plant fly ash transport
- Long-distance slurry transport pipelines
For mining projects, read PE100 HDPE Pipes for Mining Projects: Long Service Life & Corrosion Resistance, together with Mining piping systems for pipeline configurations under different mining conditions.
HDPE Dredging Pipe
Port construction, river regulation, land reclamation and marine dredging projects all require the long-term transport of slurry, sand and other highly abrasive media.
With its abrasion resistance, impact resistance, light weight and easy installation, HDPE dredging pipe has become an essential part of modern dredging works.
Depending on project requirements, it can be supplied with steel flanges, floaters, wear-resistant bends and quick-connection systems to form a complete dredging pipeline.
If your project involves port construction or river desilting, see our HDPE Dredging Pipe product page for more configurations and engineering applications.
HDPE Gas Pipe
HDPE gas pipe is mainly used for urban natural gas and medium/low pressure gas distribution systems.
Because HDPE offers good flexibility and sealing performance, joints remain stable even when slight ground settlement occurs, which is why it has become an important part of gas networks in many countries.
Products normally comply with international standards such as ISO 4437, and can be supplied in different pressure ratings and colour identifications according to project requirements.
For more product information, see HDPE Gas Pipe.
HDPE Fire Protection Pipe
Underground fire water supply systems demand extremely high pipeline reliability.
Compared with traditional steel fire pipe, HDPE fire protection pipe does not corrode underground, and its heat-fused joints create a monolithic leak-free network. More and more industrial parks, logistics and warehousing centres and large infrastructure projects are therefore adopting HDPE fire mains.
Where the project requires FM approval, the corresponding fire-service HDPE products can be selected. For product details, see HDPE Fire Protection Pipe.
HDPE Irrigation Pipe
With the development of modern agriculture, water-saving irrigation has become an important means of improving agricultural productivity.
HDPE irrigation pipe is light in weight and easy to install, and is widely used for:
- Drip irrigation systems
- Sprinkler irrigation systems
- Orchard irrigation
- Greenhouse agriculture
- High-standard farmland construction
Compared with traditional irrigation pipe materials, HDPE offers a longer service life and lower maintenance cost, and has become an important part of modern irrigation projects.
For more product information, see HDPE Irrigation Pipe.
HDPE Industrial Pipe
Industrial plants generally need to convey circulating cooling water, process water, acid and alkali liquids and industrial wastewater over long periods.
Because HDPE has excellent resistance to chemical corrosion and withstands most acids, alkalis and salts, it is widely used in:
- Chemical plants
- Power plants
- Steel mills
- Pharmaceutical plants
- Food processing plants
- Industrial parks
For different industrial media, the pressure rating, temperature and jointing method should all be considered when selecting the correct specification. See also HDPE pipe for industrial applications.

For product specifications and installation solutions, see HDPE Cable Conduit.
Main Applications of HDPE Pipe
After decades of engineering practice, HDPE pipe is no longer limited to the water supply industry — it has become an important part of modern infrastructure construction.
Municipal Water Supply
City water supply is one of the most mature applications of HDPE pipe.
HDPE water supply pipe effectively reduces leakage rates, improves transmission efficiency and lowers maintenance costs, so it is widely used in urban water supply trunk mains, integrated urban-rural water supply projects and old pipe network rehabilitation.
If you are planning a potable water transmission system, read HDPE Water Pipe Manufacturer in China for recommended pressure ratings and diameters.
Mine Tailings Transport
The mining industry has extremely high requirements for pipeline abrasion resistance.
HDPE mining pipe made from PE100 and PE100 RC can convey high-concentration slurry and tailings over the long term, effectively reducing the risk of shutdowns caused by wear.
To compare materials in more detail, read HDPE vs Steel Pipe for Tailings Transport and see how HDPE and steel pipe perform in mining projects.
Industrial Circulating Water Systems
In industrial production, circulating cooling water and process water must be conveyed reliably over long periods.
HDPE does not scale in long-term service and does not rust, so it maintains high transmission efficiency and reduces later maintenance costs.
It is widely used in power plants, chemical plants, cement plants, steel mills and industrial parks.
Water Treatment Projects
HDPE pipe is equally widely used in:
- Water works
- Sewage treatment plants
- Seawater desalination projects
- Reclaimed water systems
- Industrial wastewater treatment
Because of its outstanding corrosion resistance and stable long-term operation, more and more water treatment projects are adopting HDPE as their main pipe material.
For more industry applications, read HDPE Pipe for Water Treatment Plants.
How to Choose the Right HDPE Pipe
HDPE pipe is available in a wide range of sizes, pressure ratings and materials, and requirements vary considerably from project to project. During selection, the conveyed medium, design pressure, installation environment, operating temperature and required service life should all be considered so that the most suitable product is chosen.
For large municipal works, industrial projects and mining transport systems, the raw material grade, pressure rating, pipe size and jointing method should be fixed at the design stage in order to guarantee stable long-term operation of the whole system.
Step 1: Choose the Right Raw Material
The two mainstream materials on the international market are PE100 and PE100 RC.
PE100
PE100 is the most widely used HDPE raw material today. It offers excellent long-term hydrostatic strength and good processability, and suits the great majority of water supply, industrial water and agricultural irrigation projects.
Main applications include:
- Urban water supply
- Rural drinking water projects
- Industrial circulating water
- Agricultural irrigation
- General pressure transport systems
PE100 has a mature international track record and meets standards such as ISO 4427, EN 12201 and ASTM F714.
For PE100 product dimensions, read HDPE PE100 Pipe Specifications.
PE100 RC
PE100 RC is an upgraded material based on PE100, with much stronger resistance to slow crack growth (SCG) and point loading, making it better suited to demanding installation conditions. See also What is the difference between PE100 and PE100 RC?
Recommended applications:
- Trenchless installation
- Rocky ground conditions
- Mine tailings transport
- Long-distance trunk mains
- Areas with complex geology
As trenchless technology develops, more and more large infrastructure projects are adopting PE100 RC to further improve the long-term safety of buried pipe networks.
Step 2: Select the PN Rating According to Working Pressure
The pressure rating (PN) is the nominal working pressure the pipeline can withstand at the specified temperature over its design life.
| Pressure Rating | Typical Applications |
|---|---|
| PN6 | Agricultural irrigation, low pressure water transmission |
| PN8 | General rural water supply |
| PN10 | Municipal water supply, industrial water transmission |
| PN12.5 | Medium pressure water transmission systems |
| PN16 | Urban water supply trunk mains, mining transport |
| PN20 | Long-distance high pressure water transmission |
| PN25 | Special high pressure projects |
Note that the PN rating alone does not define the product — it must be selected together with the SDR.
If you are not yet clear about the relationship between PN and SDR, read PN vs SDR: How to Choose HDPE Pipe Pressure Rating.
Step 3: Select the Right SDR
SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) is the ratio of the pipe outside diameter to the wall thickness.
The smaller the SDR value, the thicker the pipe wall and the higher the pressure capacity.
| SDR | Corresponding Pressure Rating |
|---|---|
| SDR33 | PN5 |
| SDR26 | PN6 |
| SDR21 | PN8 |
| SDR17 | PN10 |
| SDR13.6 | PN12.5 |
| SDR11 | PN16 |
| SDR9 | PN20 |
| SDR7.4 | PN25 |
For the same material, the SDR should be selected on the basis of design pressure rather than simply choosing a thicker or thinner wall.
Step 4: Determine the Pipe Diameter
HDPE pipe is available from DN20 up to DN1800 and even larger.
Recommended sizes by application:
DN20–DN110 — suitable for:
- Building water supply
- Small-scale irrigation
- Branch pipe systems
DN160–DN400 — suitable for:
- Municipal water supply
- Industrial circulating water
- Small and medium water transmission works

- Urban trunk mains
- Industrial parks
- Water treatment projects
DN900–DN1800 — suitable for:
- Long-distance water transmission
- Mine tailings
- Seawater desalination
- Large infrastructure projects
For extra large diameter products, read Large Diameter HDPE Pipe Supplier for case studies in different projects.
Step 5: Choose the Jointing Method
HDPE pipe is mainly joined by the following methods.
Butt Fusion
This is the most common jointing method today.
Suitable for:
- Pressure pipe DN63 and above
- Municipal water supply
- Industrial water transmission
- Mining trunk lines
Advantages:
- Joint and pipe body form one monolithic unit
- Leak free
- High strength
- Long service life
For welding procedures, see How to Install HDPE Water Pipes.
Electrofusion
Suitable for:
- Trenches with limited working space
- Fitting connections
- Network repairs
- Small diameter pipework
It is easy to carry out on site and gives consistent weld quality.
Flange Connection
Flange connections are normally used for:
- Valve connections
- Pump connections
- Steel-to-plastic transitions
- Demountable joints
In large industrial projects, flange connections are generally used together with heat fusion.
HDPE Pipe Compared With Traditional Pipe Materials
In modern infrastructure construction, HDPE, PVC, steel and ductile iron are all common pipeline materials. Each has its own characteristics and should be selected according to project requirements.
