Understanding Different Types of HDPE Pipe Fusion Methods

November 09, 2024

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are widely used in water supply, drainage, gas transmission and other fields due to their excellent corrosion resistance, strength and flexibility. The connection method of HDPE pipes is crucial to the overall performance of their systems. Welding is one of the main methods for connecting HDPE pipes. This article will discuss several common HDPE Pipe Fusion Methods, including hot melt welding, electric fusion welding and plug welding.

 HDPE Pipe Fusion Method

Hot melt welding

1. Principle

Hot melt welding is to heat the joints of two HDPE pipes to a molten state, and then quickly press them together to form a strong connection after cooling and solidification. This method usually uses a dedicated hot melt welding machine.

2. Scope of application

Hot melt welding is suitable for connecting HDPE pipes of various diameters, especially small diameter pipes (such as 20mm to 160mm). It is suitable for on-site construction and factory prefabrication, with high connection strength and good sealing.

3. Operation steps

Preparation: Clean the end face of the pipe to be welded to ensure that there is no dirt, grease and moisture.

Heating: Insert the pipe end face into the heating plate of the hot melt welding machine and heat it to the specified temperature (usually around 200°C).

Pressing: After the heating time is reached, take out the two pipes, quickly connect them and apply pressure, and maintain the pressure until cooling.

Inspection: Check the appearance of the welded joint to ensure that there are no cracks and bubbles.

4. Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages: High welding strength, good joint sealing performance, suitable for high-pressure transmission.

Disadvantages: High requirements for the operating environment, professional equipment and technicians are required.

Electrofusion welding

1. Principle

Electrofusion welding uses the principle of electric heating to heat the electric fuse embedded in the pipe joint so that it melts with the pipe to form a connection. This method is suitable for pipes of various diameters, especially those in narrow spaces.

2. Scope of application

Electrofusion welding is suitable for various HDPE pipes, especially those with larger diameters (such as ≥75mm). This method is easy to operate and suitable for construction in complex environments.

3. Operation steps

Preparation: Clean the pipe joint to ensure that there are no impurities.

Installation of electrofusion joint: Install the electrofusion joint between two pipes.

Connect power supply: Connect the electrofusion welding equipment and set the appropriate welding time and temperature.

Welding: Start the equipment, heat the electric fuse to a molten state, and form a firm connection.

Cooling and inspection: After the welded joint cools down, perform an appearance inspection.

4. Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages: Strong adaptability, suitable for various environments, and simple connection process.

Disadvantages: The welding strength is slightly lower than that of hot melt welding, and the equipment cost is higher.

Plug welding

1. Principle

Plug welding is a simple connection method that inserts the end of the pipe into the joint and fixes it with welding materials or sealing rings. This method is usually used to connect small diameter pipes.

2. Scope of application

Plug welding is suitable for small diameter HDPE pipes, which are commonly found in household water supply and drainage systems.

3. Operation steps

Preparation: Clean the pipe end face and the inside of the joint.

Insert: Insert the pipe into the joint and ensure that the insertion depth meets the requirements.

Fix: Fix with welding materials or sealing rings.

Inspection: Check the tightness of the connection.

4. Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages: Simple operation, suitable for home and small projects.

Disadvantages: Low connection strength, not suitable for high pressure or important transportation systems.

Different types of HDPE pipe welding methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. The selection of the appropriate welding method depends on the diameter of the pipe, the use environment and the construction conditions. Hot melt welding and electric fusion welding are suitable for high pressure and important transmission systems, while plug welding is more suitable for light and small projects. In practical applications, engineers should evaluate according to the specific situation to ensure the safety and reliability of the pipeline system. By reasonably selecting the welding method, the service life of the pipeline can be effectively extended and its good operating performance can be guaranteed.
